Lawrence Bernstein’s artistic journey was born out of a long career in the Earth Sciences. His photography reflects a deep curiosity about the patterns, structure, and substance of human-built and natural environments. Now fully dedicated to the photographic arts, his most recent work is focussed primarily on architecture, cityscapes, and humanity.

Lawrence was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He has had a life-long passion for both photography and the Earth Sciences and holds MSc and PhD degrees in the Earth Sciences. Lawrence spent a career in energy exploration, living with his family in western Canada, North Africa, and southeast Asia. He returned to Toronto in 2018 and has since been fully dedicated to the photographic arts. Lawrence’s photography has earned numerous awards and hangs in homes and offices in Canada, the USA, England and southeast Asia. His work has been exhibited internationally and in Canada. In 2022 Lawrence had two solo photography exhibitions, Patterns Structure Substance at Labour of Love which showcased his monochrome architectural abstractions, and Metropolis- A Photographic Exploration of My City held at the Toronto Camera Club’s Powell Gallery.  In 2023 Lawrence’s work was shown as part of a group exhibit at the Powell Gallery for the Contact 2023 photography festival. In early 2024 his images of water and sand are being showcased at Biophilia, a month long celebration of the connection between humans and nature.

Lawrence is a member of the Toronto Camera Club, the Gallery 44 Center for Contemporary Photography and OFFBEAT, Canada’s largest online photographic community.
